about

Joe Andrew wondered what his favorite Spiritualized songs would sound like if they were captured in a single session on analog cassette tape with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, a melodica, and a busted delay pedal. "Those early tracks on albums like (1995's) Pure Phase were absolutely drenched in overdriven noise, and yet underneath all the psychedelia were simple and catchy blues and folk songs. Like brittle skeletons shot through a kaleidoscope". As a devout student of Elliott Smith, Joe Andrew wanted to unwrap these covers using a similar quietude, with an emphasis on vulnerable and closely matched vocal harmonies.

On "Slide Song", flutes are replaced by pensive whistling. Distorted drones on "Medication" are imitated by singing the phrase "wah-nah-nah-nah-nah" and manipulating the mouth shape to get an effect not unlike an LFO filter. What the bedroom studio lacks in gear, Joe Andrew makes up for it with subtle humor and a reverence for the original songs.

The warm hiss and pop characteristic of the Tascam MarkIII 424 anchor these heavily-produced originals way down to the dank immediacy of the basement lab. The grandeur of Spiritualized plays against the minimalism inherent in having only four tracks and limited recording technique. Whereas Jason Pierce is famous for burning through several producers and engineers on a single record, the lofi 4-track ethos is about getting it on tape, the first or second time, and leaving it at that. The songs do the rest.
